I love photography and travel. These galleries are mostly from travel in the past few years. I find that photography is a great form of self expression that, for the most part, requires no captions. While it's important to know where the photos were taken, sometimes there is such thing as too much definition. Thanks for taking the time to look.

If you have linked from Ashland University community or MPEG, please take the time to look through the galleries from Alaska, Alberta, and Vancouver, British Columbia and feel free to contact me for more information on upcoming road trips. Welcome to all! Thanks!

The Great Land : Alaska in one of my favorite vacation places. It is moody and beautiful and ever-changing. It is a place worthy of more than a cruise ship visit from Vancouver or Seattle where you may only have hours in a port. It requires days of walking and hiking, getting to know the landscape and the people. It is more than one visit. Take your time and strike out on your own.

British Columbia : Many of places in British Columbia are in the book "1,000 Places to See Before You Die". Vancouver should not be your stayover on the way to or from a cruise ships. You need to stay and explore a culturally diverse region with incredible food, gorgeous scenery and wonderful neighborhoods. Small coffee shops, four-star restaurants, greasy spoons and funky eateries are part of the experience. Just go and take a slow walk around the Stanley Park seawall, breathe deep of the salt air and contemplate life in one of the many gardens.

Al-Can : In late May 2007, my then 5 year-old daughter and two friends and I drove the Alaska Highway. We didn't lose a windshield or get a flat tire. The route is paved and a challenge at times, especially the frost heaves, which are marked by flags. We devised a slalom technique to "ski" around them when there was no traffic coming from the opposite direction. It beat hitting the brakes to slow down every few minutes. We left Cleveland and drove all around the central interior of Alaska and ended up in Skagway, then took the ferry to Juneau. They went home and I stayed behind in Sitka to work as an archaeologist for several weeks.

Driving the Alaska Highway is so fun! It is just gorgeous and these photographs do not begin to represent the incredible diversity along the route. It is well worth the adventure. I recommend flying into Calgary or Anchorage and renting a car from there for your trip.

Cats : We have three cats. I love my cats. Odysseus, the first four here, is the most camera shy. When we have people over, he disappears. Telemachus, his brother and litter mate, and Comet, a stray, both love company as long as it doesn't include little children. Then they all hide under the bed in the guest room until at least an hour after everyone leaves. We tell people that we have three cats but most will only see two unless you stay for a while. I may post a few of our first kitty, Shakespeare, who died of cancer in April 2006. We went to our local animal shelter to donate his unused litter and food and we went back to the kitten room. The kitten who would be Telemachus jumped out of the opened cage and into my lap the moment I sat on the floor to play with the kittens. Odysseus perched on my husband's shoulder in a way that could not be ignored so when they were old enough, we brought them home in May 2006. Comet showed up on the back porch on chilly, rainy October day and we couldn't turn her out. Our animal shelter could not take in additional cats so we kept her. We are happily owned by three cats!

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial : Summer 2008 - I'm working on South Bass Island. It is in the western basin of Lake Erie. The monument is a singular column rising from the island. It can be seen from the Ohio mainland and almost anywhere from Pelee Island (in Canadian waters) to Catawba and Marblehead. It is the only peace memorial in the National Park System and signifies lasting peace between the United States, Canada and Great Britain since the conclusion of the War of 1812. It was constructed from 1912 - 1915. An elevator that takes less than a minute takes you gently up 317 feet above Lake Erie. On clear days, the view is awesome.

Even during winter, the landscape can be surpringly beautiful in the starkness of the cold and snow. It makes for some different four season photography.

Historic Weekend : Historic Weekend is an annual event at Perry's Monument after Labor Day weekend. This year, it was September 6 and 7, 2008. It's a really busy, crazy time for the staff but we also have a lot of fun. The Boy Scouts also hold a Camp-O-Ree. There were around 1200 McGyvers-in-training camped out on the east side of the monument. The only good way to get a handle on the sheer numbers of Scouts was from the monument deck. The weather was beautiful on Saturday. Sunday morning, we woke up to rain and the Scouts bugged out early. Eventually, the clouds cleared and the sun came out later in the day.

Alberta : I really like Alberta. The province is geographically diverse - from the badlands and rolling countryside of the southerneastern and east-central part to the sharp incline of the Canadian rockies in the western and northern part to the incredibly desolate landscape of the route to the Alaska Highway, it's just amazing. Most of my trips have concentrated in Banff and Jasper National Parks and I hope to go back some day soon.
