South Bass Island Galleries

Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial : Summer 2008 - I'm working on South Bass Island. It is in the western basin of Lake Erie. The monument is a singular column rising from the island. It can be seen from the Ohio mainland and almost anywhere from Pelee Island (in Canadian waters) to Catawba and Marblehead. It is the only peace memorial in the National Park System and signifies lasting peace between the United States, Canada and Great Britain since the conclusion of the War of 1812. It was constructed from 1912 - 1915. An elevator that takes less than a minute takes you gently up 317 feet above Lake Erie. On clear days, the view is awesome.

Historic Weekend : Historic Weekend is an annual event at Perry's Monument after Labor Day weekend. This year, it was September 6 and 7, 2008. It's a really busy, crazy time for the staff but we also have a lot of fun. The Boy Scouts also hold a Camp-O-Ree. There were around 1200 McGyvers-in-training camped out on the east side of the monument. The only good way to get a handle on the sheer numbers of Scouts was from the monument deck. The weather was beautiful on Saturday. Sunday morning, we woke up to rain and the Scouts bugged out early. Eventually, the clouds cleared and the sun came out later in the day.
